Fovea

Fovea is a prototype software developped for experimenting on video display for Computer Mediated Communications (CMC). The goal is to provide the user with both a global view and a focused view of a remote location.

Two different cameras are used by the system: a wide angle IndyCam provides the global view, while a pan-tilt-zoom SONY camera provides the focused view.
The first prototype reproduce the Extra Eyes idea: a wide angle camera provides the global view of the remote scene while a zoomed camera provides a higher resolution image of the Region Of Interest (ROI) in the first view. The location displayed in the focused view is represented by a rectangle in the global view. Notice that it is possible to have a detailed view on the working area, while still being aware of what is happening in the room. Notice also that the gaze have to jump from one view to the other.

Fovea removes the visual discontinuty between the global and focused views: the focused view is displayed on top of the global view, and a blending is applied on the boundary between the two images.
