The Perceptual Browser Movie (SGI O2)

To view the movie in this page, your browser must be able to display an mpeg movie using one of its plug-ins. On Macintosh or Windows, the QuickTime plugin displays any kind of movies.

The movie shows the browser window (top left) containing purple blocks and grey blocks. The user have to scroll the window to find all the grey blocks and click on them.
The tracking window is displayed on the bottom right. The red square represents the current location of the target, the green one represents the area that was searched to find the target.
The system runs on a SGI O2 worksation (processor R1000 at 150 Mhz). The tracking running frequency is more than frame rate (30 Hz) with a 20x20 target and a 40x40 search size. It is 9 Hz with a 32x32 target and a 60x60 search size (with this setup, the Macintosh runs the tracking at 60 Hz).
Scrolling the window content consumes a lot of processing, so the overall running frequency (when the browser window is scrolling) typically drops down to 6 Hz.
A longer movie shows the tracking behavior with bigger target and search sizes, and a higher running frequency (thanks to the PowerPC)
